One At A Time says it all about a situation in this country that needs to be brought to the fore front of our society. The book was moving, touching, and most of all it tells it like it is in what shelters across this country have to deal with. It touches on the emotions of not only the authors but also what the staff at shelters deal with day to day. We as humans need to open our eyes and realize that we share this planet with not just ourselves but with dogs and cats that some would just treat as disposible and not think twice about doing so. The animals have feelings and the authors touch on the saddness of being given up and some the joy of finding new hope in a new home. The pictures in the book of each animal and what the out come is for each one can at times break your heart. The book is up front on showing statistics and how we as a society can turn the tide and make a better life for our four legged companions. Would I recommend this book? Absolutely! Be prepared to have tissues on hand as this can be a difficult read at times but one that needs to be shared by many. Thanks to the authors that have written a beautiful and eye opening book, I now volunteer for two no-kill shelters.
I read this book in 2 nights (short sessions both nights, as I had school work) so it is a rather quick read but it is not lacking content at all. I was deeply moved by the book, I felt immense sorrow and anger for the animals featured in this book. The chapter on euthanasia was especially difficult, but necessary. The images were rather difficult, especially the euthanized pets in the storage bins. I don't think it's something anyone would necessarily read more than once, I don't think I could anyway. Once is enough to get the point, especially when you're already considered about animals in the first place. I'm considering donating my copy to one of our libraries here so that others may be moved as well.
still wiping the tears away

love the book. it gives a really good look into the sheltering world. i have been involved with shelters and animal rights for quite some time and know its all too true for the animals that were euthanized in the creation of the book. i had to stop multiple times because i was crying so hard.
best and worst part of the book are the photos. seeing their faces and looking into their eyes made it personal, and it makes you feel helpless.
i feel everyone should read this book because it gives enough of a look into reality without being completely off-putting. a great tool to educate people who just dont know whats really going on in the world.
